Dwarkadheesh Temple, Gujarat
The iconic temple of Lord Krishna
In the sacred city of Dwarka, there exists a revered name whose splendor surpasses even human understanding, leaving souls in admiration of its celestial beauty. This is the iconic temple of Lord Krishna, widely recognized around the globe as the Dwarkadhish Temple.
Superlatives seem inadequate when facing this holy shrine, for its beauty and divine essence are extraordinary. Yet, some have attempted to encapsulate its magnificence with names like Jagat Mandir (universal shrine) and Trilok Sundar (the most beautiful across all three worlds).
Thought to have been established centuries ago by Lord Krishna's great-grandson, Vajranabh, the temple serves as a significant cornerstone of the esteemed Char Dham pilgrimage, alongside Rameswaram, Badrinath, and Puri. The hallowed grounds of this temple have welcomed not only devotees and pilgrims but also revered saints and sages. One prominent example is Adi Shankara, a distinguished Hindu theologian and philosopher, believed to have visited this shrine in the 8th century. Even today, a memorial within the temple stands as a tribute to his presence.
The epitome of architectural brilliance
Ascend 56 steps up the small hill, and you will be greeted by the Dwarkadhish temple in all its splendor. There is a reason this temple bears the name Trilok Sundar. Upon arrival, you will be struck by the magnificence of its towering five-story structure, skillfully crafted from limestone and sand. Surrounded by a base of 72 pillars, the temple is crowned with a magnificent spire that reaches a breathtaking height of 78 meters. At its peak, a flag flutters in the wind, made from 52 yards of fabric that is replaced five times daily. If you observe the flag closely, you will notice the sun and the moon depicted on it, symbolizing that Krishna will be here as long as these celestial bodies exist.
With the intricate designs of 16th-century Chalukya architecture, the temple features beautifully carved walls adorned with mythical figures and legends, inviting visitors through its entrance. Speaking of entrances, the temple possesses two doors (entry and exit), referred to as ‘dwars’ in Sanskrit. The entryway is called ‘swarg’ (heaven’s gate), while the exit is termed ‘moksha’ (liberation’s gate). Inside the sanctum resides the idol of Swarna Dwarkadhish, an exquisite statue of Lord Krishna. Carved from black marble, his flute rests elegantly in his hand, embellished with fine adornments and precious gems that shine with divine brilliance.
Originally constructed in 200 BCE, the Dwarkadhish Temple has withstood both destruction and restoration through the ages, ultimately achieving the magnificence it boasts today, dating back to the 16th century.
Rich in ancient stories
A visit to the Dwarkadhish Temple feels like opening a portal to India's mythological history. One such tale recounts how Sage Durvasa once visited Lord Krishna and his wife, Rukmini, requesting their company to his palace. After a lengthy journey, Rukmini felt parched and asked Krishna for help. Krishna tapped the ground with his bow, and the river Ganga emerged. Unfortunately, as Rukmini forgot to offer water to the sage, he grew angry and cursed her. This event is thought to have inspired the temple’s construction.
