The temple that saves mankind
Situated in the Tirumala Hills, the temple called the ‘Temple of Seven Hills’ is dedicated to Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu, believed to save mankind from Kali Yuga. It is one of the Pancha Kshethram temples, where Maha Lakshmi was born as Bhargavi.
Built around 300 CE, the temple has undergone changes over time, with Venkateswara standing in the Garbhagruha facing east. The complex features modern Queue buildings and lodging for pilgrims, while legends say the deity will remain throughout Kali Yuga.
With over 60,000 visitors daily, the temple is one of the most visited religious sites globally.
The legend that created the temple
During Dvapara Yuga, Adishesha became Seshachalam Hills. A divine sequence involving sage Bhrigu’s test of gods led to Venkateswara meditating here as Srinivasa, who later married Padmavati. A quarrel led him to turn into a stone deity, providing solace to mankind.
A historical perspective
The temple is mentioned in the Tamil epic Silappathikaram from the 2nd century CE. It has a rich history with endowments by various dynasties, including the Pallavas and Cholas. Ramanujacharya’s visits in the 11th and 12th centuries were significant, establishing new practices. The temple is now administered by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).
