Driven by a deep longing to marry Lord Shiva, she engaged in years of penance in the Hemakuta Hills, overlooking the site where the temple now stands. Moved by her steadfast devotion, Lord Shiva eventually wed her, sanctifying the ground where their union took place. Consequently, the revered Virupaksha Temple came into being, a cherished symbol of eternal love and sacredness. Even now, locals contend that marrying within the splendid mandapam is exceptionally auspicious, as it is believed to be blessed by Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva themselves.

Of ‘gopuras’ and Ranga Mandapa

As you stand at the entrance, you will be gazing towards the heavens since the ‘gopuram’, or entry tower of Virupaksha Temple, ascends to an impressive 50 meters. But that’s merely the entry point. Inside, the vast complex is breathtaking in its beauty, showcasing smaller shrines and pavilions adorned with intricate carvings and delicate motifs. You will also encounter three additional towering gopuras that appear to protect the temple.
