Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, officially known as Sultanpur National Park, is a globally renowned wetland and a designated Ramsar Site located in the Gurugram district of Haryana. Situated on the Gurgaon-Farukh Nagar Road, it is approximately 15 km from Gurugram city and around 46 km from Delhi, making it one of the most popular weekend eco-tourism getaways in the Delhi NCR region. The park spans roughly 142 hectares and serves as a critical refuge for over 250 species of resident and migratory birds.
Key Visitor Information
Timings: Open from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Visitors are advised to arrive early in the morning for the best bird-spotting opportunities.
Weekly Closing: The park is strictly closed on Tuesdays.
Annual Closure: To give the ecosystem a breather during peak summer and monsoons, the park completely shuts down from June 1 to September 30 every year, reopening on October 1.
Entry Fee: ₹50 per person for Indian nationals.
Camera Charges: An additional fee of around ₹50 to ₹70 applies for carrying DSLR cameras.
Core Rules: Outside food/eatables and picnicking are strictly prohibited inside the park to maintain cleanliness and protect wildlife. You must bring an original ID proof to fill out an entry form at the gate.
Best Time to Visit
The peak season is during the winter months, specifically from November to February. This is when thousands of winter migrants travel immense distances via the Central Asian Flyway to cross into the park's wetlands.
Winter Migrants: Greater Flamingos, Northern Pintails, Eurasian Wigeons, Common Teals, Bar-headed Geese, and Northern Shovelers.
Resident Birds: Indian Peafowl, Red-wattled Lapwings, Painted Storks, White-throated Kingfishers, and Cattle Egrets.
Threatened Species: The park occasionally plays host to vulnerable species like the Sarus Crane and Black-necked Stork.
Park Infrastructure & Experience
The park features a 3.5 km circular walking track built around the central lake, allowing visitors a flat, easy route to explore the area. There are four to five elevated watch towers (machans) strategically placed along the path to provide panoramic 360-degree views of the marshes without disturbing the birds. For elderly visitors or those needing assistance, eco-friendly electric carts are available. The property also houses an Educational Interpretation Centre, a small museum, and an adjacent Haryana Tourism resort complex equipped with a restaurant.
