About Odisha.
People and Culture
Home to the largest concentration of tribes in India, Odisha exhibits a rich and diverse socio-cultural tapestry, particularly in regions such as Sambalpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Mayurbhanj. Oriya is the predominant language, sharing similarities with Bangla and Assamese. Hinduism is one of the principal religions practiced, alongside Islam, Christianity, and Buddhism, while tribal groups like the Santhals and Mundas adhere to Saran tribal traditions. Among the top 50 festivals celebrated in Odisha, Ratha Yatra, the Konark Dance Festival, and Durga Puja stand out as prominent events.
In terms of traditional attire, Oriyas are particularly inclined towards wearing cultural garments, especially during festive seasons. Men typically adorn dhotis, kurtas, and Gamchas, whereas women are often seen draped in vibrant silk sarees. Dalna—an iconic Oriya dish prepared with lentils and green vegetables—is a must-try for visitors, along with the delectable dahi vada and aloo dum. Seafood, particularly chingudi tarkari made with prawns, is also highly recommended.
Arts and Handicrafts
The Odisha Cultural Travel Guide highlights a profound heritage of stone carving, pattachitra (a cloth-based painting), sculpture, and architecture. Notable artistic works include appliqué, palm leaf paintings, horn crafts, and tarakasi work. The 5th-century Jagannath Temple in Puri showcases artistic walls adorned with Pattachitra, recognized as Odisha's oldest art form. Additionally, the sand art found on Puri's beaches is a remarkable spectacle, while palm leaf etchings play an integral role in countless traditions of Odisha, characterized by muted color palettes.
Fairs and Festivals
Opt for Odisha festival packages to immerse yourself in the cultural, traditional, and local festivities. The Rath Yatra in Puri is one of the most celebrated events in Odisha, commencing with 'Snana Purnima,' when the idols of Lord Jagannath, his brother Lord Balarama, and sister Goddess Subhadra are bathed. They remain in seclusion for a period of 15 days known as 'Anabasara,' during which no public worship is conducted. Following this period, the deities emerge in a colorful procession to commence the Rath Yatra. Other significant festivals include Durga Puja, Kalinga Mahotsav, the Konark Dance Festival, and various crafts fairs.
Wildlife
A significant portion of Odisha is enveloped by dense forests that provide habitat for various species of wildlife. The forests are predominantly deciduous and encompass trees such as bamboo, teak, sal, rosewood, and sagwan.
Nandankanan Zoological Park, Simlipal National Park, and Ushakothi Wildlife Sanctuary represent some of the region's acclaimed wildlife parks. The Nandankanan Zoo houses over 1700 animals, including white tigers, Asiatic lions, Indian crocodiles, turtles, snakes, and a vast array of birds.
Simlipal National Park is noted for its Gaur population and serves as a tiger reserve. This area derives its name from Semul, a type of tree that thrives abundantly within the park. It is home to more than 40 mammal species, 240 bird species, and nearly 20 reptile species.
Dance and Music
The realms of music and dance in Odisha have undergone extensive evolution over a continuous span of approximately 2500 years. Odissi, the renowned classical dance of the state, draws its roots from the Devadasis sect—young women residing in temples who viewed themselves as married to the divine, thus offering tribute through their dance performances.
Other dance forms present in the region include Chhau, Ghoomra, Ranapa, and Paika akhara. Oriya classical music presents an exquisite synthesis of Hindustani and Carnatic musical styles, comprising four principal classifications: dhruvapada, panchal, chitrakala, and chitrapada.
