Punjab - The Land of Five Rivers

The term "Punjab" is derived from the Persian words meaning "Five Rivers," specifically referring to the Indus, Ravi, Sutlej, Beas, and Jhelum rivers that flow southeastward across the region. These rivers, along with their sub-tributaries, have established the foundation for an extensive canal system, supporting agricultural prosperity throughout the state. Known for its fertile soil and ample water resources, Punjab is a key agricultural hub in India. The state's remarkable growth over the years is attributed to the success of the Green Revolution in the early 1970s, enabling it to achieve self-sufficiency in crop production.

Tourist Destinations

Prominent among Punjab’s attractions is Amritsar, a city renowned for its rich religious heritage. Visitors can explore several historical Gurdwaras, each linked to the Sikh Gurus. Notably, Gurdwara Baba Atal Sahib and the Shahidi martyr’s shrine stand out as significant religious centers, each with its own unique history. Additionally, the Jallianwala Bagh memorial serves as a solemn reminder of one of the darkest episodes in India's struggle for independence, commemorating the tragic events of the massacre in 1919. Shoppers can find affordable woolen blankets and sweaters in Amritsar, and the Katra Jaimal Singh area in the old city is an excellent location for acquiring distinctive souvenirs.

Pinjore Gardens

The Yadavindra Gardens host special programs during the Baisakhi (spring) festival in April and the Mango Festival in June and July, which serve as major tourist attractions for individuals visiting Punjab.

How To Reach Punjab

The airports in Chandigarh and Amritsar offer regular flights connecting to other cities in India. Additionally, Punjab is well connected to various parts of the country through an extensive rail network, with major railway hubs located in Chandigarh, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Pathankot, and Jalandhar. The state boasts a robust and comprehensive system of metalled roads, with state highways linking key cities to the capital. The NH 1 (Grand Trunk Road) serves as a crucial arterial route connecting Punjab to northern and northeastern regions of India, while other significant national highways passing through the state include NH 15, 19, 20, 21, and 1A.
